Cornerstones Studies

Our dynamic curriculum and campus activities reflect Hockaday’s Cornerstones of Courtesy, Character, Scholarship, and Athletics. In Middle School, students participate in Hockaday’s unique Cornerstones Studies Program focusing on the development of character and courtesy.
Dedicated Faculty

Hockaday’s exceptional faculty provides not only instructional excellence but also a true dedication to the education and development of each girl, reinforced by our innovative programs. The Middle School faculty and staff ensure that each student develops her unique gifts and talents, discovers new passions, and views mistakes and challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. We provide a joyful learning environment and a culture that promotes self-understanding and knowledge of the world.   
Eighth Grade Musical

The tradition of the Hockaday musical goes back to 1954, when Hockaday became the first school in the Southwest to do a full-book musical – the tradition of the Eighth Grade musical followed soon after. Every Eighth Grader participates - either on stage or behind the scenes.
Fine Arts Rotations

The goals of the Middle School Fine Arts program are to foster innovative, creative self-expression, to build skills, to expose each girl to multiple ways of making and experiencing art, and to promote the self-esteem of each student.
Green and White Day

One of Hockaday’s most beloved Middle School traditions is the year-long competition as students vie to earn points for either the Green or White team during PE, and at the end the year, participate in Green and White Day, complete with a pep rally, dance off, water games and a tug-of-war competition to earn points. Each team earns points for Spirit, Winning, and Sportsmanship.
Innovative Curriculum

Students explore new ideas, experiences, and perspectives. Classes are taught based on a six-day rotation that covers core English, mathematics, history, world languages, science, physical education, and fine arts. Each class incorporates real-world connections, critical thinking, organizational and study skills, and cooperative learning.  Ultimately, our students discover new reservoirs of self-confidence as they acquire the skills they need in reading, writing, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving to succeed not only academically, but in their day-to-day lives.
Middle School Bazaar

Each Middle School advisory creates an item to sell at the holiday bazaar. Students, faculty, and parents stop by to shop, and all proceeds go toward a nonprofit chosen by the Middle School Student Council.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Athletics

Health and fitness are major components of the curriculum in Middle School. The emphasis begins with health and wellness and individual and team sports. Seventh and Eighth Grade students can try out for one of 11 sports.
Williamsburg and DC Trip

Sixth Graders love their week-long trip to Williamsburg and Washington DC. They visit Jamestown Settlement, Ford’s Theatre, the International Spy Museum, the Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr. and World War II memorials, museums, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Archives, and more!
